Ballerina Bowers, formerly with the New York City Ballet, has developed an exercise regimen based on ballet postures and movements. She is best known for having trained Natalie Portman for her role in Black Swan. Heavily illustrated with photographs of poses, the book demonstrates body positions that, with proper muscle tension, act like isometrics. Bowers also demonstrates exercises to tone and strengthen various muscle groups using ballet moves such as the arabesque and tendu. In addition, there is a short section on diet and the importance of eating fresh, unprocessed foods, which includes several recipes. VERDICT The exercises look deceptively easy, but anyone who has studied ballet can testify to how crucial it is to have an instructor present to insure that posture and muscle tension are precisely correct. On the other hand, none of the exercises will have a negative effect so long as readers keep reasonably close to the photos--and who doesn't want to cultivate the posture and grace of a ballerina? Recommended for balletomanes and fans of Black Swan.--Susan B. Hagloch, formerly with Tuscarawas Cty. P. L., New Philadelphia, OH
