Gr 8-10-These graphic-novel biographies are engaging and detailed. Ali's exciting life lends itself well to an entertaining adaptation, which focuses not only on his boxing career, but also on his dedication to civil rights and social justice. Helfand is particularly skilled at building the suspense in Ali's attempts to become the world heavyweight champion. The drawings are a little stiff, and there are some scenes in which there is not enough attention to capturing period detail. However, the colors are vibrant, and the layouts are dynamic, with dramatic fight scenes often breaking out of the panels. It's a good source for reports. Short biographies of Ali's opponents are included. Mandela includes a brief history of 20th-century South Africa along with a full account of Mandela's full life. The black, white, and gray illustrations are elegant and expressive but murky. Endnotes include a glossary and additional facts about South Africa. Though the art may not attract readers, the text is informative.-Lisa Goldstein, Brooklyn Public Library, NY
