LaFosse and Alexander have explored the artistic side of Japanese paper folding for more than two decades via their Origamido Studio. Here, they help beginners progress to the next level with paper folding via a series of lessons focusing on specific techniques. Each lesson begins with a brief description of the artist's process in designing the piece, as well as key takeaways. Folding instructions are presented using standard origami diagrams. VERDICT This thoughtful, in-depth guide is recommended for advanced beginners who are interested in learning the artistry of origami while simultaneously refining their skills.

Authors LaFosse and Alexander view origami as expressive artan art form to be mastered through continued practice and dedication, similar to music or dance. Each project is a brief study designed to be completed in one sitting and practiced repeatedly until the folder has mastered the featured techniques (and from then on used to keep those skills in top form). Much detail is included regarding the authors' philosophy of folding, origami as a way of connecting with others, folding as art rather than craft, finding oneself as an origami artist, selecting materials, preservation, and showing and selling origami. The projects, mostly creatures, include the quintessential Japanese crane, a shark created from a dollar bill, and an orchid designed as a wedding decoration. Though the cover touts this as the complete guide for everyone, the authors note in the introduction that if you are new to origami, this book is probably not for you, as they consider other sources a better introduction and this book a tool for those who already have basic skills and wish to become proficient.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
